Myopia Control & Pediatric Care in Newport Beach
Nearsightedness, or myopia, is on the rise, especially in children. In fact, by 2050, it's estimated that half the world’s population will be affected, and rates in the U.S. have already more than doubled over the past 30 years. At SALT. Optometry, we care for kids at every age—from their first eye exam to long-term myopia management. Whether it’s their first pair of glasses or their third year wearing MiSight® lenses, we’re here to support their vision.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, means your child can see clearly up close, but things at a distance (like the board at school or road signs) appear blurry. It happens when the eye grows longer than it should, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it.
While glasses or contact lenses can correct blurry vision, they don’t stop myopia from getting worse. That matters because the higher the prescription climbs, the greater the long-term risk of severe eye diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment.
Children often don’t realize their vision has changed, and they may not complain about it. That’s why routine eye exams are essential, especially during the years when their eyes are growing quickly. Early detection allows us to intervene before myopia becomes more difficult to manage.
Signs Your Child Might Have Myopia
Many children assume what they see is “normal,” even when it isn’t. That’s why it’s essential for parents and caregivers to recognize the signs that may indicate myopia or other vision issues, such as eye teaming or focusing problems, that impact reading, learning, and confidence.
Common signs your child might be struggling with their vision include:
- Squinting to see things far away (like the TV or classroom board).
- Sitting very close to screens or holding books inches from their face.
- Complaining of headaches or eye fatigue, especially after school.
- Avoiding outdoor play or sports that require distance vision.
- Frequent prescription changes or needing stronger glasses every year.
- Rubbing their eyes or blinking excessively.
- Trouble with coordination, balance, or attention in the classroom.
If any of these sound familiar, it’s a good idea to schedule a comprehensive eye exam. The earlier we catch it, the more we can do to slow it down.
Myopia Management in Newport Beach
We offer personalized myopia management plans designed to slow the progression of nearsightedness and protect your child’s long-term vision. Our approach is focused, evidence-based, and tailored to your child’s age, lifestyle, and the rate of change in their prescription.
While glasses can help your child see clearly, they don’t stop myopia from getting worse. That’s why we use treatment options that address the rate of eye growth and lower the risk of future vision complications.
MiSight® Lenses
MiSight® is the first and only FDA-approved daily soft contact lens designed to slow the progression of myopia in children aged eight and older. These lenses are worn during the day, just like regular contacts, offering clear vision and effective myopia control in one simple, kid-friendly solution.
What Can You Do at Home?
While in-office treatments are key to slowing myopia, what your child does at home also plays a crucial role. Small daily habits can support their eye health, reduce eye strain, and reinforce the work we’re doing together. Here’s what you can do to help:
- Encourage outdoor time: Natural light has been shown to reduce myopia progression.
- Take screen breaks: Use the 20-20-20 rule—every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
- Watch screen distance: Help your child avoid holding devices or books too close.
- Create good lighting: Make sure reading and homework areas are well-lit.
- Stick to treatment plans: Whether it’s ortho-k, MiSight®, or eye drops, consistency matters.
